RAID 5
Stop and think for a minute – what would happen if your computer just suddenly decided to stop working? You suddenly couldn’t access any of your files, and you couldn’t get at any of your information. How much important data would be lost to you? How many hours of lost work would it represent if all of your files suddenly were damaged, or simply disappeared? For most people, the mere idea of such a disaster is enough to bring on heart palpitations and cold sweats – and yet many people simply don’t take any time to back up your files. Just how safe are you files? What would you do in the case of a system meltdown? The way to answer questions like this is to have an understanding your built in data protection devices and knowledge of just how many layers of protection you have already built into your computer to protect your documents. A good place to start any conversation like this is with a discussion of RAID.
What is RAID?
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives, but what that really means is RAID refers to the smaller, individual drives that make up your hard drive. If you have a low RAID number, like RAID 0, then you have very little internal back ups for your data, if you have nay at all. If you have a higher number, you have a higher level of protection for your files. RAID also has an impact on your computer performance. Higher RAID numbers usually translate into faster computer speeds.
What is RAID 5?
RAID 5 is the second highest level of basic RAID protection you can have – RAID 6 is the highest available as a single unit, but you can increase that by buying individual RAIDS for you system. RAID 5 data recovery systems are thought to be amount the best, because RAID 5 has an internal triple back up system – RAID level 5 has three RAID 5 clone drives for your system. RAID 5 recovery software can defrag your files and protect them.
Getting RAID 5
If you have a smaller back up system on an older computer and want to get close to RAID 5 protection, you can download RAID 5 drives or you can download individual RAID files to make on mega DIY RAID 5 server. Whatever method you decide to use, make sure you choose software that is compatible with your computer. For instance, if you use a Mac, you will need Macintosh RAID files or for Intel systems, SATA RAID 5 software.
