P2P Downloads
If you’ve ever shared files online, chances are you have used a P2P file sharing network to do so. P2P stands for peer to peer file sharing. What peer to peer file sharing means is that you are sharing files with your “peers” – your fellow internet users – instead of downloading files from a central database. When you use a peer to peer file sharing system, there is no central system at all. All of the files are instead held on the computers of private users. You can access the files via the P2P system and download them to your computer directly form the computers of other users. There are tons of peer to peer file sharing download programs online, so you can find a network that suits you and your computer operating system. P2P downloads are most often music downloads, but they can include anything from games and software to movies and music video clips.
The Benefits of P2P Downloads
Peer to peer downloads system have many benefits. First of all, most of the time, they are free file sharing downloads, so you don’t have to spend any money to access all of the great files on offer. The second thing P2P downloads offer over traditional download that use a central system is speed of download. Imagine what would happen if everyone thousands of people logged on to download a single file of one hit song. The lines would be jammed, and you would have to wait days to get the downloaded file, if you could download it at all. Most likely, the network would simply collapse under the weight of the demand and you would be unable to get the file at all. With P2P downloads, however, if you want a particular song, if you search the network, you are likely to find several different versions of the file available. That means you can get the file now, instead of fighting the major demand.
The Downside to P2P Downloads
While free P2P download files are certainly a great thing, they do have their drawbacks. Allowing people access to the files on your computer is a huge security risk, and you can never quite be sure the file you are downloading from other people’s computers is what it says it is until you have actually opened it. Also, P2P download programs can come bundled with adware and spyware that can be annoying at best and a real risk to your system at worst.
