eDonkey
When it comes to sharing files online, there are two ways of thinking. The first camp involved the entertainment industry, especially the music industry, which feels that online file sharing should be illegal, because it allows people to download and trade copyright controlled material without paying for it. The second camp seems to be everyone else, judging by the numbers of people who use one file sharing system or another to trade files online everyday. These millions of people love having all of their favorite music, movies, videos, graphics, software, games and more at their fingertips at all times. Because online file sharing is so popular, tons and tons of different file sharing programs have popped up in the internet, most of which can be downloaded completely free of charge. eDonkey is one of these popular file sharing programs.
About eDonkey
eDonkey, which is sometimes knows as eDK2 or eDonkey 2000, is a peer to peer, or P2P file sharing program. What that means is that eDonkey is a gateway through which people can share files on their computers with other internet users. It does not store any files or maintain a database of any files to download; it merely provided the means of connection and file transfer for people who want to share files. Unlike some peer to peer file sharing programs which double as a network of users, eDonkey software can be used with a number of popular peer to peer file sharing networks; for instance, eDonkey and Kazaa run together. You can, however, use eDonkey’s search system to search for your desired files through the eDonkey compatible peer to peer networks. Because the eDonkey server is constantly changing, you can check the eDonkey server list to make sure you are running the right program.
Trouble for eDonkey
eDonkey is primarily used by people to trade music files, and as such, the software came under fire from the music industry. In 2007, eDonkey settled a $30 million dollar lawsuit with the recording industry for copyright violations. The eDonkey software interface is still available online, however.
Download eDonkey
If you want to give eDonkey a try for your file sharing needs, you can download eDonkey free from the eDonkey home page. eDonkey software works on Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems. If you’re looking for an eDonkey client with which to find your favorite tracks, check the eDonkey links on their website.
